Cardinals pull away from White Sox 7-3 with three-run fifth

Joshua Báez and Leo Bernal had three hits apiece, and St. Louis answered both of Chase Meidroth's home runs.

WHERE IT TURNED

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-3 on Friday night at Busch Stadium in a game that began after a 70-minute delay.

Chase Meidroth homered to center in the first for Chicago, and St. Louis answered in the bottom of the inning when Alec Burleson doubled to right to score Iván Herrera. Masyn Winn's force out scored Leo Bernal in the second for a 2-1 lead. Meidroth tied it with a second homer, to left-center, in the third, and Joshua Báez singled home Jordan Walker in the bottom half to put the Cardinals back in front.

St. Louis scored three in the fifth: Burleson singled in Walker, Báez doubled to left to score Burleson, and Bernal singled home Báez for a 6-2 lead. Bernal added another run-scoring single in the seventh. Chicago's third run came in the eighth on a Munetaka Murakami force out that scored Sam Antonacci.

Gordon Graceffo earned the win in relief. Anthony Kay took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in four innings. Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore went 4.1 innings and gave up two runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Báez went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Bernal was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Burleson had two hits and two RBIs. Meidroth finished 2 for 4 with two homers for Chicago. Attendance was 30,274.
