Padres score five in first two innings, hold off Giants 6-4

Fernando Tatis Jr. had three hits and two RBI, Manny Machado homered, and San Diego's bullpen did not allow a run over the final four innings.

San Diego scored five runs in the first two innings and beat San Francisco 6-4 on Sunday at Oracle Park.

Jackson Merrill's double to left in the first scored Fernando Tatis Jr. and Dustin Harris for a 2-0 lead. In the second, Tatis singled to center to score Samad Taylor, and Manny Machado homered to left with Tatis aboard to make it 5-0. Andrew Knizner answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer to left that scored Shay Whitcomb.

Tatis singled home Ethan Salas in the fourth for a 6-2 lead. The Giants got a run in the fifth on Bryce Eldridge's groundout that scored Christian Koss, and another in the sixth on Koss's single to center that scored Scott Bandura. That was the last of the scoring.

Wandy Peralta earned the win with 1.1 hitless innings, and Yuki Matsui recorded the save. Logan Webb took the loss for San Francisco after allowing six runs on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

Nick Pivetta started for San Diego and allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 4.0 innings.

Tatis went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Machado and Merrill drove in two runs apiece. Eldridge, Whitcomb and Koss each had two hits for the Giants, and Koss stole two bases. The Padres committed two errors. Attendance was 35,115.
