Pirates score three in the sixth, hold off Cubs 4-3

Brandon Lowe's two-run single put Pittsburgh ahead, and three relievers did not allow a hit over the final 3.2 innings.

WHERE IT TURNED

Pittsburgh scored three runs in the sixth inning and beat Chicago 4-3 on Sunday at Wrigley Field.

Bryan Reynolds singled to left in the first to score Konnor Griffin, and Oneil Cruz was thrown out at third on the play. The Cubs went ahead 2-1 in the fifth on Miguel Amaya's home run to left with Pedro Ramírez aboard.

The Pirates answered in the sixth. Nick Gonzales's ground-rule double to right scored Reynolds to tie it, and Brandon Lowe lined a single to center that scored Rafael Flores Jr. and Gonzales for a 4-2 lead. Nico Hoerner's groundout scored Michael Busch in the bottom of the inning, and neither team scored again.

Bubba Chandler earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Carmen Mlodzinski worked 1.2 hitless innings, and Luke Weaver and Mason Montgomery each followed with a hitless inning, Montgomery's for the save. Matthew Boyd took the loss for Chicago after giving up four runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

Reynolds went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Jake Mangum was 2-for-3 with a double, and Cruz walked three times. Lowe drove in two. For the Cubs, Amaya finished 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, and Busch had two hits. Chicago drew six walks but managed five hits. Attendance was 39,103.
