Red Sox break a 1-1 tie late, beat Royals 4-1 after long delay

Roman Anthony and Trevor Story delivered run-scoring singles in the seventh and eighth after Payton Tolle's six scoreless innings.

Boston scored three runs over the seventh and eighth innings and beat Kansas City 4-1 on Sunday at Fenway Park in a game delayed 110 minutes.

Caleb Durbin's home run to left center in the second gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead that held into the seventh, when Carter Jensen's single to right scored John Rave to tie it. Boston went back ahead in the bottom of the inning on Roman Anthony's single to left that scored Durbin, and Trevor Story's two-run single in the eighth scored Willson Contreras and Adley Rutschman for the final margin.

Garrett Whitlock earned the win, recording two outs without allowing a run, and Aroldis Chapman struck out three for the save. Craig Kimbrel took the loss after walking two and allowing a run while recording one out.

Payton Tolle started for Boston and allowed four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over 6.0 scoreless innings. Noah Cameron matched him for most of the afternoon, going 6.0 innings for Kansas City and allowing one run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Contreras went 2-for-3 with a walk, and Story was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Durbin homered, walked, scored twice and stole a base. The Royals had five hits, struck out 12 times and committed two errors; Bobby Witt Jr. struck out three times. Attendance was 34,966.
