Royals hold on to beat Red Sox 3-2 at Fenway

Kansas City scored all three runs by the third inning, and four relievers kept Boston off the board after a two-run fifth.

The Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Friday night at Fenway Park, scoring early and then holding a one-run lead over the final four innings.

Salvador Perez singled home Carter Jensen in the top of the first. In the third, Jensen doubled to left to score Isaac Collins, and Vinnie Pasquantino singled in Jensen for a 3-0 lead.

Boston got both of its runs in the fifth. Mickey Gasper homered to right-center, and Wilyer Abreu doubled to center to score Adley Rutschman and cut the lead to 3-2. The Red Sox did not score again.

Seth Lugo earned the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over five innings. Nolan Hoffman, Connor Thomas and Nate Pearson each worked a scoreless inning, and Steven Cruz pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. Sonny Gray took the loss for Boston, giving up three runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six innings.

Jensen went 2 for 5 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Perez and Michael Massey each had two hits for Kansas City. Abreu was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Boston. Attendance was 36,890.
