Ranger Suarez goes seven as Red Sox beat Royals 5-1

Ranger Suarez pitched seven innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Adley Rutschman singled home Roman Anthony in the bottom of the fourth for a 1-0 Boston lead. Carter Jensen tied it in the top of the sixth with a homer to right, the only run Kansas City scored.

Boston answered in the bottom of the sixth when Wilyer Abreu doubled to right, scoring Mickey Gasper and Rutschman for a 3-1 lead. Caleb Durbin's single in the seventh scored Nick Sogard, with Durbin thrown out at second on the play, and Sogard doubled home Trevor Story in the eighth to make it 5-1.

Suarez earned the win, allowing 1 run on 5 hits with no walks and 8 strikeouts. Garrett Whitlock struck out three in a scoreless eighth, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a hitless ninth. Randy Dobnak took the loss for the Royals; he gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 5 2/3 innings with no walks and 4 strikeouts.

Anthony and Rutschman each had two hits for Boston, and Sogard went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Abreu's double accounted for 2 RBIs. The Red Sox finished with 10 hits, 4 of them doubles. Kansas City had 5 hits and struck out 11 times; Jensen's homer was its only extra-base hit apart from a double by Vinnie Pasquantino. Attendance was 36,877.
