The first quarter was scoreless. Kyle Konrardy's 29-yard field goal at 14:17 of the second and Jaylen Raynor's 4-yard pass to Vince Benetti at 7:51 gave Iowa State a 10-0 lead. Hank Brown's 1-yard run at 5:34 and Buhr's 45-yard field goal with 0:28 left tied it at 10 by halftime. Konrardy's 51-yard kick at 10:06 of the third put the Cyclones back ahead 13-10, and that held until Buhr's 32-yarder at 6:22 of the fourth tied it again. Buhr's 42-yard field goal at 0:15 was the game's last score.
Brown completed 21 of 30 passes for 191 yards; Tony Diaz caught 8 for 95 yards, and Kamari Moulton ran 15 times for 57 yards. Iowa finished with 284 total yards and converted 5 of 15 third downs.
