Boston College intercepted AJ Surace four times and held off Rutgers 28-21 on Friday at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill.
The Eagles scored the first 17 points. Evan Dickens ran in from 19 yards at 10:42 of the first quarter, Mason McKenzie added a 10-yard run at 5:15, and Luca Lombardo kicked a 30-yard field goal at 13:33 of the second. Surace's 4-yard pass to Antwan Raymond with 1:55 left in the half got Rutgers on the board at 17-7, and Lombardo's 46-yarder as the half expired made it 20-7.
Surace hit KJ Duff from 4 yards at 2:37 of the third to cut it to 20-14. McKenzie's 78-yard pass to Dawson Pough at 7:06 of the fourth, followed by a two-point pass to Johnathan Montague Jr., pushed the lead to 28-14. Surace answered at 6:18 with a 60-yard touchdown to Duff, and that was the final score.
Surace finished 18 of 27 for 230 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Duff caught 8 passes for 137 yards, and Raymond ran 27 times for 134 yards. McKenzie was 18 of 29 for 252 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions and led Boston College with 94 rushing yards on 13 carries; Pough had 4 catches for 106 yards. Rutgers held the ball for 34:32 and gained 384 yards to Boston College's 402. Rutgers turned it over four times, the Eagles three. Attendance was 40,611.
