Virginia Tech scored 17 points in each of the first two quarters and beat Old Dominion 44-21 on Saturday at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg.
John Love's 39-yard field goal at 10:23 of the first quarter opened the scoring. Marcellous Hawkins Jr. ran 20 yards for a touchdown at 3:01, and Tyson Flowers scored on a 14-yard fumble recovery at 2:29 for a 17-0 lead. Nathanial Eichner's 34-yard field goal with 0:04 left got Old Dominion on the board. Ethan Grunkemeyer threw to Luke Reynolds from 10 yards at 8:23 of the second and from 16 yards at 6:51, and Love added a 22-yard field goal at 3:10 for a 34-3 lead; Eichner's 51-yarder as the half ended made it 34-6.
Love kicked a 25-yard field goal at 6:33 of the third. Quinn Henicle's 7-yard pass to Leon Haughton Jr. at 1:14 cut it to 37-13, Grunkemeyer's 1-yard run at 11:03 of the fourth made it 44-13, and Henicle's 76-yard run and two-point conversion run at 7:49 produced the final margin.
Grunkemeyer completed 31 of 42 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns; Reynolds caught 8 for 108 yards. Henicle was 13 of 21 for 187 yards and led Old Dominion with 83 rushing yards on 16 carries; Josh Rodriguez caught 3 passes for 89 yards. Virginia Tech held the ball for 38:24, converted 10 of 21 third downs and was 3 for 3 on fourth down. Old Dominion lost three fumbles; the Hokies lost two. Attendance was 65,632.
