Tulsa beat Sam Houston 23-17 on Saturday at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium, scoring 13 points in the third quarter and none in the fourth.
Landyn Locke threw 39 yards to Chris Reed at 12:02 of the first quarter for a 7-0 Sam Houston lead. Trequan Jones' 3-yard run at 13:57 of the second tied it, and Locke answered with a 94-yard pass to Jerrian Parker Jr. at 6:48. Owen Carey's 41-yard field goal at 2:12 made it 14-10 at halftime.
Tristan Lawyer ran 56 yards at 10:10 of the third to put Tulsa ahead 16-14; the extra point failed. Jones then broke an 81-yard run at 7:22 for a 23-14 lead. Sam Carpenter's 39-yard field goal at 1:02 was the last score.
Jones finished with 125 yards on nine carries, and Tulsa ran for 241 of its 367 yards. Baylor Hayes was 16 of 29 for 126 yards. The Golden Hurricane converted 4 of 6 fourth downs but only 4 of 17 third downs. Thomas Davis had two sacks.
Locke completed 24 of 34 for 316 yards and two touchdowns; Parker's two catches went for 101 yards. Sam Houston rushed for 55 yards and lost a fumble, the only turnover of the game.
