2026-27 NBA season preview: the Knicks defend, the stars scatter, six benches get new coaches

The dates that matter

The league's official calendar is set. Teams playing preseason games outside North America open training camp on Sept. 22; everyone else opens on Sept. 29. Preseason games begin Oct. 3, opening-day rosters must be set by 4 p.m. CT (5 p.m. ET) on Oct. 19, and the regular season starts Oct. 20. Further out: the trade deadline is Feb. 11, All-Star 2027 is in Phoenix on Feb. 19-21, the regular season ends Sunday, April 11, with all 30 teams playing, and the SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament runs April 13-16. Opening night is an NBC/Peacock tripleheader: the Boston Celtics at the Detroit Pistons at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET), the Philadelphia 76ers at the New York Knicks at 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET), and the Oklahoma City Thunder at the San Antonio Spurs at 8:30 p.m. CT (9:30 p.m. ET). It is the NBA's 81st regular season. Each team has dates and opponents for 80 of its 82 games; the other two, played Dec. 4-10, depend on Emirates NBA Cup Group Play results. [S2]

The champion and the teams chasing it

The Knicks are the defending champions. They beat the Spurs in the 2026 Finals, a series that opened in San Antonio on June 3, and they will raise the banner before hosting Philadelphia on opening night. Mike Brown won that title in his first season as New York's coach. [S1] [S2] [S3]

New York's summer was mostly about keeping the group together. The Knicks return 88% of last season's regular-season minutes, fourth-highest in the league, and they have nine players who shot the league average of 36% or better on at least 100 3-point attempts last season, two more than any other team. The one real loss is Mitchell Robinson, whom the Knicks could not pay while staying under the second apron; he signed with Boston, and New York replaced him with 14-year veteran Andre Drummond on a one-year deal. San Antonio, the Finals loser, is running back nearly everything. The Spurs return 92% of last season's minutes and retained all 10 players who logged at least 100 playoff minutes. Victor Wembanyama signed a five-year extension, and the team's one outside addition was Tobias Harris on a two-year deal. Oklahoma City, which lost the 2026 Western Conference Finals to San Antonio, went the other way: the Thunder made no outside additions, re-signed Isaiah Hartenstein and Kenrich Williams, and traded away Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander enters the season as the two-time reigning MVP. [S2] [S8] [S9]

In the East, the league's own schedule notes flag Boston and Detroit as the conference's two best regular-season records from 2025-26, and the Pistons as last season's No. 1 seed. Cleveland was New York's opponent in the 2026 East Finals; the Cavaliers re-signed James Harden and extended Donovan Mitchell. [S2] [S8]

Then there is Philadelphia. The 76ers went 45-37 last season and were swept by the Knicks in the second round. They have not won a title since 1983 or advanced past the second round since 2001. In one summer, new team president Mike Gansey acquired Jaylen Brown from Boston and signed LeBron James, adding both to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. [S5] [S6]

The player movement

The Brown trade became official on July 6: Boston sent the 2024 Finals MVP to Philadelphia for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks. Brown is coming off career highs of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while Jayson Tatum missed most of the season recovering from an Achilles tear. James announced his decision on July 24 and the signing became official on July 27; he called it his "last decision," said he had strongly considered retirement, and per reports took a two-year, $8 million deal after making nearly $53 million in 2025-26. Giannis Antetokounmpo's move was also finalized July 6. Miami acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round swap and a 2033 second-rounder. Antetokounmpo, 31, is a two-time MVP coming off an injury-shortened season in which he averaged 27.6 points; the Bucks held him out of their final 15 games in a dispute over his health that drew a league investigation. Miami also signed Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Nick Richards. His Heat debut is Oct. 21 against Minnesota, and he returns to Milwaukee on Jan. 28. [S2] [S4] [S8]

That Oct. 21 game is also LaMelo Ball's first with Minnesota. The Timberwolves landed Ball and Josh Green from Charlotte in a four-team trade that sent Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three first-round swaps and three second-rounders to the Hornets, Julius Randle to Brooklyn and Nic Claxton to Chicago. Ball played 72 games last season, averaging 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.1 assists, and pairs with Anthony Edwards on a team that reached the West semifinals. Minnesota also signed Jonathan Kuminga and lost Mike Conley to Boston. [S2] [S7] [S8]

Beyond the four headliners: Portland acquired Ja Morant from Memphis on June 29 for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, and the Lakers, without James, turned over most of the roster around Luka Dončić, adding Walker Kessler in a July 8 sign-and-trade with Utah and Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes and others in free agency. The Lakers' players under contract account for just 42% of last season's minutes, the lowest continuity in the league. [S9] [S10]

Six new head coaches

One-fifth of the league changed coaches. Tiago Splitter replaces Billy Donovan in Chicago; Dusty May replaces Jason Kidd in Dallas after winning the NCAA title at Michigan; Taylor Jenkins replaces Doc Rivers in Milwaukee; Jamahl Mosley left Orlando for New Orleans, where Willie Green and interim coach James Borrego are out; Sean Sweeney, a Spurs associate coach on last season's Finals run, takes Mosley's old job in Orlando; and Micah Nori, a Timberwolves assistant, replaces Splitter in Portland, where Splitter had been the interim coach. What is unresolved

The biggest open item is a trade. As of the league's Sept. 12 update, the Raptors-Clippers deal that would send Kawhi Leonard to Toronto and Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick to the Clippers is still listed as "multiple reports; deal on hold" rather than officially announced. Antetokounmpo's contract is another: the nba.com report on the trade says it is "generally presumed" Miami will give him a large extension later this year, which is presumption, not a transaction. And two games per team remain unscheduled until Cup Group Play sorts out the Dec. 4-10 slate; the NBA TV schedule and the April 11 ESPN doubleheader are also to be announced. [S2] [S4] [S8]

Whether continuity or consolidation wins is the season's central question, and we will not have a model position on it until real, timestamped outputs exist.
