The 2026-27 NHL season: 84 games, a Sept. 29 start, and Carolina raising a banner against Florida

The NHL's 2026-27 season is the first played under the collective bargaining agreement the league and the NHL Players' Association ratified on July 8, 2025, and the changes are visible on the calendar before a puck drops. The regular season is 84 games per team instead of 82, the preseason is compressed into eight days, and the whole thing starts on Tuesday, Sept. 29, only the second September start in league history after 2007-08. The dates and the 84-game format

The preseason runs from Saturday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 26: 65 games across 36 NHL and neutral-site venues, closing with 14 games on the final Saturday. The league describes it as the first season of a reduced preseason schedule under the new CBA, made to accommodate the expansion of the regular season to 84 games with two more divisional games per team. Neutral-site dates include Carolina against Nashville in Greensboro, N.C. on Sept. 24, Philadelphia against Washington in Hershey, Pa. on Sept. 21, Los Angeles against Vegas in Ontario, Calif. on Sept. 19, and a Kraft Hockeyville game between Montreal and Ottawa in Trois-Rivières on Sept. 21. The CBA itself runs from Sept. 16, 2026 through Sept. 15, 2030. Under it the preseason is capped at four games per team, and the regular season, 82 games since 1995-96, becomes 84. The same agreement enforces the salary cap in the playoffs for the 20 dressed players, trims maximum contract length to seven years for a player re-signing with his own team and six for an outside free agent, raises the minimum salary to $850,000 this season, and requires cut-resistant neck protection for players making their NHL debut in 2026-27 or later. The regular-season slate is 1,344 games across 194 days, and the league notes this is the third 84-game season in its history after 1992-93 and 1993-94. Each team plays 28 games inside its division (four against each of seven rivals), 24 against the rest of its conference, and 32 non-conference games, split 42 home and 42 away. All 32 teams play on Oct. 13 and again on the final day, Saturday, April 10. [S3][S1]

How the season opens

Opening night is an ESPN tripleheader in the U.S. The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes raise their banner against the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center at 4 p.m. CT (5 p.m. ET), the New York Rangers visit the Boston Bruins at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET), and the Chicago Blackhawks visit the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights at 9:30 p.m. CT (10:30 p.m. ET). In Canada, Sportsnet carries the Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Montreal Canadiens at 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET), a game the league says will likely include the NHL debut of No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna, followed by the Vancouver Canucks at the Edmonton Oilers at 9 p.m. CT (10 p.m. ET). TNT opens the next night, Sept. 30, with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Philadelphia Flyers at 6:30 p.m. CT (7:30 p.m. ET), a rematch of a 2026 first-round series the Flyers won in six games, and the Los Angeles Kings at the Colorado Avalanche at 9 p.m. CT (10 p.m. ET). [S5]

The signature dates follow a familiar rhythm. The Heritage Classic sends the Canadiens to Winnipeg on Oct. 25. The Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken play in Helsinki on Nov. 12 and 14, and the Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators play in Düsseldorf on Dec. 18 and 20. The Winter Classic puts the Utah Mammoth and Avalanche at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Dec. 31, and the Stadium Series puts the Dallas Stars and Golden Knights at AT&T Stadium on Feb. 20. The All-Star Game returns for the first time since 2024, at UBS Arena, with skills on Feb. 5 and the game on Feb. 6. The first Cup Final rematch is Dec. 21 in Vegas, with the return in Carolina on Jan. 17. [S1]

The champion and the teams chasing it

Carolina went 53-22-7, won the Metropolitan Division and the Cup, and enters Rod Brind'Amour's ninth season as coach with most of its roster intact. The one significant departure is goalie Frederik Andersen, who left for Edmonton in free agency; Brandon Bussi and Pyotr Kochetkov will share the net. Forward Seth Jarvis had shoulder surgery in June with a four-to-six-month recovery, so he will miss the start of the season. The only offseason addition likely to make the opening roster is defenseman P.O Joseph, signed to a one-year, $850,000 contract on Sept. 8. [S6]

The opening-night opponent is not a coincidence. Florida won the Cup in 2024 and 2025, then went 40-38-4 and missed the playoffs last season while Aleksander Barkov missed the entire year after knee surgery. The Panthers rebuilt aggressively: Brady Tkachuk arrived from Ottawa on June 21 for the No. 9 and No. 25 picks in the 2026 draft, a conditional 2029 first-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick, and Jacob Markstrom was acquired from New Jersey to replace Sergei Bobrovsky, who signed with Toronto. Vegas, the West champion, went 39-26-17 and reached the Final after John Tortorella replaced Bruce Cassidy with eight games left. Tortorella did not return; the Golden Knights hired Ryan Craig, who has never been an NHL head coach, and traded leading scorer Pavel Dorofeyev to the Rangers on June 26 for two first-round picks and a third. Six new head coaches

The league's official June 23 list of coaches confirms six teams changed head coaches since last season opened: Jim Hiller in Toronto, Mike Babcock in Edmonton, Ryan Craig in Vegas, Manny Malhotra in Vancouver, Peter Laviolette in Los Angeles and Peter DeBoer with the New York Islanders. [S7]

The two that shape the most expectations are in Canada. Toronto fired Craig Berube on May 13 after a last-place finish in the Atlantic, hired Hiller on June 17 under new general manager John Chayka, then drafted McKenna first overall and signed Bobrovsky to a three-year deal. Edmonton fired Kris Knoblauch on May 14 after three seasons and two Final trips, and on June 23 hired Babcock, who had not coached an NHL game since November 2019; the NHL said on June 18 that its review of his time in Columbus found "no current basis to restrict his employment in the League." The marquee moves

Beyond Tkachuk and Bobrovsky, the offseason's headline transactions ran through the goal crease and the blue line. Andersen signed a one-year, $2.8 million contract with Edmonton on July 1. Carolina acquired pending free agent John Carlson from Anaheim on June 27 and tried to sign him, but he signed a two-year, $17 million contract with Tampa Bay on July 1. Dorofeyev signed a seven-year, $77 million contract with New York after the trade. Toronto also added Darren Raddysh from Tampa Bay in a sign-and-trade with a new eight-year contract, and Buffalo traded defenseman Bowen Byram to Chicago for the No. 4 pick and sent Alex Tuch to Washington in a sign-and-trade. What is unresolved

Carolina still has not re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin, who lacks arbitration rights and is ineligible for an offer sheet; general manager Eric Tulsky acknowledged the trade calls on him. Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck has made his wish to be traded public, according to NHL.com's Sabres preview. A group of veteran free agents remained unsigned as of Sept. 2, led by Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrik Laine and Cam Talbot. In Vegas, the decision between Carter Hart and Adin Hill has been left to Craig and goaltending coach Sean Burke. And the league says complete national broadcast details are still to be announced. BetMetrics has no model output on any of this yet, and the honest framing is that the 84-game format is the one change that touches every team equally. The open question we will watch is whether the two extra divisional games and the compressed preseason change how the standings separate in October, but that is a question for timestamped results, not a preseason expectation.
